England & Worcester Legend
Worcestershire and England batsman, Graeme Hick, is to take part in a cricketing 'Audience With' as part of the Shobdon Food Festival's programme of events later this month. The second highest run-scorer of all time will host the question and answer session in a marquee on the grounds of Shobdon church, north Herefordshire, on Friday the 26th of June at 7.30pm. The event is kindly sponsored by Shobdon Post Office and Stores.
The event will also see an auction of sporting memorabilia including a cricket bat signed by the 2005 England cricket squad and a rare commemorative bat signed by the great West Indian all-rounder, Sir Garfield Sobers.
Festival Organiser and Setanta Sports television presenter, Matt Teale, said: "Graeme Hick scored more centuries than Sir Donald Bradman and W.G. Grace and we are delighted he has agreed to come and speak at Shobdon as part of the festival's fifth anniversary celebrations. This is a rare opportunity to hear him reflect on his career and get his views on this summer's upcoming Ashes battle."
Hick, who retired from cricket after 24 seasons with Worcestershire last year, played 65 Tests and 120 One Day Internationals for England. He scored 136 first class hundreds, putting him 8th in the all-time list. Only 25 batsmen in history have scored a century of centuries and Hick sits alongside some of the greats of the game like Jack Hobbs, Wally Hammond, Vivian Richards and Dennis Compton in achieving the feat.
The event will double as a fundraiser for Shobdon Cricket Club whose ground adjacent to Shobdon's unique church had been the clubs' home since at least the 1930's. It was returned to farmland over 30 years ago, but was transformed back into one of the county's most picturesque grounds in 1998. The club hit financial problems last year and came close to disbanding. Only a plea for financial help answered by former players from the past forty years kept them afloat. Now the club hopes to build on the success of last season's promotion to Division Two of the Herefordshire GB Liners Marches League.
Matt Teale said: "Graeme Hick played in the Worcestershire side that came to reopen our ground back in the late 1990's. I don't know if he remembers coming here or not? We'll ask him on the night. Lords, the MCG, New Road, Shobdon. It has a ring about it, doesn't it?"
Tickets cost £10 and include light refreshment (licensed bar available) and can be booked through Terry Teale on 01568 708 725 or by emailing shobdonfoodfestival@yahoo.co.uk.
